Process Paper
Our research process started by us looking for topics that we found both interesting and relatable. We thought about all the events that have occurred in the history of the United States, but decided to choose a topic that we thought impacted not only our nation, but the world as a whole. The Wright Brothers and the evolution of flight provided us with the opportunity to research how an event that helped shape our nation’s history also continues to play an active role in our lives today.
Once we decided on our topic, we began our research by exploring the internet for valid and credible sources that related to both the Wright Brothers and flight in general. Our search began with a various number of sources which allowed us to further educate ourselves on the topic. Once we felt familiar and comfortable with the information, our group was able to narrow down our sources. Only those that related to our topic and to our theme of turning point remained. Websites such as NASA and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum were extremely useful to our research process because they provided us with both a modern and premodern outlook on the information related to our topic.
We chose the theme “Turning Point” for our project because we felt that the invention of the airplane was a major advancement that impacted both the older and the modern world. Air travel provided the United States with the chance to expand its interests to foreign places both socially, militarily, and economically. People began to travel worldwide due to easy accessibility on airplanes. Goods and resources were able to be exchanged quickly and efficiently, and wartime techniques greatly changed with the introduction of overseas interactions. These various aspects of life affect all people, so our group thought that the “Turning Point” theme accurately described the world in regard to communication and travel, and overall human connection.
After researching our topic and relating it to a common theme, our group decided to portray our information in website format. We chose this method because we thought it would provide us with the chance to incorporate digital resources such as videos and pictures found on the internet, as well as information that we compiled from various sources such as websites or books. We were able to utilize the Weebly website generator to create our own personal website, where each member could edit and collaborate on the project at various times. This website’s layout allowed us to incorporate multiple primary sources such as photographs, and to easily format the appearance of our gathered information.
The Wright Brothers and flight was an important mark of the past, however it continues to impact the lives of all of us today. Due to the undying dependence of humans on aviation, our group researched and created a website that attempted to portray the importance of this event in United States history.
